Injured Greyhound Rescued at Interstate Rest Area

Madison County, Illinois: A 2-year-old black and white male greyhound, wearing a racing muzzle and a plastic collar, was found Nov. 1 at an Interstate 55 rest area northeast of St. Louis.

The greyhound had multiple sores and bruises on his body and was taken to the Metro East Humane Society shelter near Edwardsville, where he underwent treatment with antibiotics for more than three weeks.

Shelter officials speculated that the greyhound, dubbed Gino by staff members, was a racing greyhound that escaped while being transported. The wounds are an indication the greyhound was abused, shelter officials said.

Gino was turned over to St. Louis REGAP in early December and will remain in foster care until a suitable adopter can be found. Janet Crowley, the group's vice president of adoptions, told GNN in late December that Gino still has several open pressure sores on his elbows and some abrasions.
