Why does our society tolerate the mistreatment of greyhounds and other dogs?

Now that the brouhaha at Tucson Greyhound Park has died down, only one thing matters: That it doesn't.If you missed it, on the evening of Aug. 31, full-time trainer and part-time inebriate David Blair spotted a handler or "cool out" carrying a dog from the track. After a visual inspection by a track veterinarian, the dog was diagnosed with a fractured lower back leg, or hock. Owner Kevin Mathieu, when contacted by cell phone, wanted the dog put down.

Blair objected; a fractured hock is one of the most common injuries in racers, non-life-threatening and easily mended if wrapped and rested. But Mathieu did not see it that way. Even though Blair had already called an adoption group, which was en route, when police hauled him away, the 2-year-old female called "Messy" was killed. read more

Two-week suspension spurred by confrontation over euthanizing dog

A Tucson Greyhound Park kennel owner, widely supported by dog-adoption groups, had his operations shut down and his license suspended for being drunk on the job, the track's Board of Stewards ruled Tuesday night.
The suspension stems from a Friday night incident when kennel owner David Blair tried to keep a veterinarian from euthanizing an injured greyhound, said Tom Taylor, the track's general manager. read more

David Blair has a kennel full of greyhounds whose racing days are long gone, and that is just fine with him.

"I've never put a dog to sleep, never killed a dog in 30 years," Blair said. read more
